Offered for sale is a pictorial map of Peking (Peiping) drawn by John Kirk Sewall and published by Peiyang Press, Ltd. Tientsin - Peiping circa 1938 - 1945.
The map covers three areas of the city: Tartar City, Imperial City (including the Forbidden City) and Chinese City. It is designed with small illustrations of landmark buildings and black silhouettes of workers, pedestrians, and animals.Essentially a tourist map since it includes sightseeing attractions, rail stations, hotels, etc. It also depicts the Legation Quarter. John Kirk Sewall created two editions of this map, the earlier edition was entitled with the city name of Peiping. The first representation of the map with the name Peiping was used from 1928 to 1933 and included representation of the German Legation with the black, red, and gold Reichsbanner flag which was banned in 1933.
The later edition of this map Sewall entitled it with the city name of Peking and included two black, red, and gold Reichsbanner flags to represent the German Legation and the Austrian Legation since Germany had annexed Austria in 1938; therefore, the edition of this map was used from 1938 - 1945. The two Reichsbanner flags are illustrated on this map in the Legation Quarter. The map is in overall good clean bright and attractive condition with no rips or tears. There are old folds and creases with some yellowing of the paper consistent with age and storage in the envelope.The slipcover envelope also has some yellowing & brown spots. It does have a tear on the upper top right side along the seam with two small holes at the bottom corners of the envelope. It measures 23 5/8" L x 19 5/8" W. Happy to answer any questions.
