The beautiful plates of court and other Chinese and Manchu costumes were hand coloured by members of a famous family of court painters who served for generations in the Qing Court. According to the Foreward of Hardy Jowett, each image is "authentic in detail and colour and wonderfully executed" and it offers a standard portrayal of Costumes rapidly falling into disuse, some already so.
