Thomas Cook started an Around the World Tour in 1872, which for 200 guineas, included a steamship across the Atlantic, a stagecoach across America, a paddle steamer to Japan, and an overland journey across China and India, lasting 222 days. North China, South, Manchuria, and Korea.

With Maps Plans and Illustrations. Published by Thomas Cook & Son. This vintage Thomas Cook guide to China from 1920 is complete with three maps. The book paginates with [(160), (xvi)] pages. The advertisements at end are truly fascinating; apparently some hot spots were the Astor House hotel in Shanghai and the Grand Hotel des Wagon Lits in Peking. The binding comes in green cloth with the title in black on the front board. Internally the guide is in excellent condition with very little foxing present. The guide measures 18 x 13 cm, or 7 x 5 inches. The book details life in Shanghai, Peking, Northern China, Manchuria, Korea and the Yangtze Valley. The book discusses food, railways, currency, hotels, and so forth. In its day Thomas Cook was without doubt the Rolls Royce of the global travel industry and this book is indeed an example of their legendary emphasis on detail. Many images of the book are above for you to examine the condition and contents of the guide.
