Is a very old and rare original book of 24 x 29 cm collotype prints loosely fixed onto the thick pages. The prints all show views of Peking in and around 1913. The book was published in Peking in 1913 by the famous photographer John D Zumbrun who was the photographer to the last Emperor of China. There are 30 pages of photos to the book and each print has been hand placed and fixed into the book.Is very rare and was put together by hand. The early photographs that document China are often sparse and fragmentary, however John D. Zumbruns old photographs provide one of the rare complete visual documentation of Beijing around the early part of the 20th century.
At that time, John D. Zumbrun resided in Beijing (Peking) for a long period and had multiple professions: owner of "Camera Craft" commercial store, official photographer of Chinese notables and probably Kodaks main distributor for northern China. This proficient photographer recorded everyday life and decisive events while the city was experiencing significant changes, such as traditional rituals, weddings, students demonstrations, and other social activities. His portraits and aerial photographs, taken from a balloon, attest to his distinctive manner to create dynamic composition. John David Zumbrun served eight years in the United States Army and is a Spanish-American War veteran and then a photographer at 16 Legation Street Peking. He was an accomplished photo journalist shooting events as they unfolded around him in the heart of China. He was also considered an official photographer of the Imperial Court with many unique and unpublished images taken of "The Last Emperor" as an infant through his teen years. The title on the cover is Peking Art Series III. On the cover is fixed a color image. Guaranteed to be an original 1913 book, it is not a modern copy or reprint. NOTE: I have series IV, and V for sale under two separate listings, so please see my other listings. All in very good condition.
